Amidst the kaleidoscope of colours, a mural titled "Generation to Generation" stands tall, a creation by Amir Andhar, renowned as Andharas. An ode to the yesteryears, this masterpiece captures the essence of Air Itam's origin. Established in 1786, Air Itam witnessed the growth of families, cultures, and stories. Today, though the young generation might have thinned, the spirit of unity thrives during festive times, as the marketplace buzzes with activities, offering a glimpse into the authentic old-world Penang.
Kites Got Stuck
The winds of nostalgia gently blow as we encounter "Kites Got Stuck," a collaborative work by Dana Ng and Nur Hana Tan. The canvas pays tribute to childhood memories as kites soar against the azure sky. Once a cherished pastime of children from diverse backgrounds, kite flying painted the sky and united hearts, forming bonds that transcended differences. This mural, a testament to unity, invites visitors to relive their youthful innocence.
Susu Tarik
On another wall, Khow Zew Wey, known as Bibichun, gifts us "Susu Tarik," an embodiment of community connections. The mural encapsulates the story of Mr. Kathiravelu, who transformed fresh pulled milk into an art of taste. His stall, illuminated for 32 years, continues to be a beacon of tradition. With the optional addition of raw eggs and fluent Hokkien, Mr. Kathiravelu's pulled milk becomes a cultural heritage, bridging the gap between the past and the present.
Curry Mee Ah Ma
Leonard Siaw, a self-taught mural artist, immortalizes two culinary pioneers in "Curry Mee Ah Ma." The effervescent Madam Lim Kooi Lye and Madam Lim Kooi Heang, affectionately known as the Siamese sisters, stirred the pots of curry noodles for decades, etching their journey onto the taste buds of Penangites. Beyond the tantalizing aroma, this mural tells a tale of resilience and sisterhood, where these extraordinary women devoted their lives to a shared passion, leaving an indelible mark.
Trendiness!
In a world bridged by social media, "Trendiness!" by Dana Ng beckons the youth to join the conversation. With a pop culture blend of Japanese, Korean, and Western elements, the mural captures the essence of modern leisure. Amidst the amalgamation of trends, an anime icon showcases a larger-than-life tuna sushi, while Pikachu captures the zeitgeist of selfies, inviting young explorers to embrace their trendy selves.
Laksa
Dana Ng's brush dances again to capture the soul of Air Itam in "Laksa." A bowl of thick wheat noodles steeped in spicy fish-based sour broth, this dish has been savoured by generations. As the aroma wafts from traditional Laksa stalls, visitors are transported through time, experiencing the continuity of flavours that unite the past with the present.
Smile Before Leaving
Amidst these vivid expressions, "Smile Before Leaving" introduces us to the Sunda slow loris, a shy yet powerful messenger. As an endangered species, it echoes a plea for environmental awareness. Nestled in Penang Hill's rainforests, this creature inspires visitors to tread lightly and appreciate the profound beauty of nature. In its gaze, we are reminded that Air Itam's exploration extends beyond culinary delights and selfies—a voyage unravelling the heart of existence.
Mural Blind
The collaboration between a team of 12 students and teachers from Sense Perfect International College, guided by professional artist Jess Teh, resulted in visually striking murals that celebrated local culture. Iconic Air Itam landmarks like Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Temple were depicted in seven mural blinds, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the Air Itam Market Annex Food Court. The project rejuvenated the food court's ambience and served as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative by SPIC. The transformation reflects Air Itam's vibrancy and underscores the value of artistic collaborations in enhancing public spaces.
